Netflix series “Squid Game”: How to play the traditional Korean game ‘Squid Game’

I can see some Korean traditional games in the trailer video. And also the shape of the poster looks like from the game called ’Squid Dalguji’: a circle, a triangle and a square.

I’m not sure the game is going to be in the movie, but the name of the series is related to this game, and also shapes are on the game hosts’ masks too. So let’s learn how to play it.

 

*The name of this game is오징어 달구지[o-jing-ʌ dal-gu-ji] in Korean. I’m gonna call it ‘Squid Dalguji’ for the explanation.

 

 

 

 

First, draw the following picture on the playground.

Six to eight players are good for this game.

Players are divided into two groups, an offensive team and a defensive team.

*The game rule could be different in different region.

The game begins when the offensive team shout 'squid' and the defensive team reply 'Dalguji'.

The defensive team should be only inside the body.

The offensive team are in a top circle before the game starts, and moves out when it starts.

The offensive team has to crosses the body(defensive team area) from the gate, and they are going to win when one of their player reach the blue part and shout 'squid'.

Squid Game Explanation 2

The offensive team has to hop on one leg outside the circle.

If you want a shortest way to the goal like a picture on the left, the offensive team player should hop along beginning to the end. 

 

There is another way to cross the bridge in the middle without going directly to the gate.

You can walk on two feet while crossing the bridge. (Route 2 in a picture on the right)

After crossing the bridge, you can use both legs even you are outside of the bridge.

This method makes it easier to reach the goal, but be careful the defensing players when you cross.

 

 

 

 

Squid Game Explanation 3

If the defensive team goes outside of the body line during the game, they are out of the game.

Conversely, if the offensive team steps inside the boundary line, they are fail.

While the offensive team moves, they push and pull each other and fight to get them out.

The winning team becomes a offensive team and the game is repeated.
